Heavy metals and coal Heavy metal refers to any metallic chemical element that has a high density and is toxic or poisonous at low concentrations. Coal contains many heavy metals, as it is created through compressed organic matter containing virtually every element in the periodic table - mainly carbon, but also heavy metals. The heavy metal content of coal varies by coal seam and geographic region. A variety of chemicals (mostly metals) are associated with coal that are either found in the coal directly or in the layers of rock that lie above and between the seams of coal.[1][2] |

DOI: 10.1089/
ees.2008.0043
Abstract
Chromate poisoning causes severe skin disorders such as allergic dermatitis
and liver and kidney damage. The present study attempts
to capture the environmental impacts of industrial effluent irrigation from a
tanning industrial cluster. In recent years, groundwater in the study area
forms the mainstay of domestic water supply source for meeting the community
needs. However, the threat of chromium contamination in groundwaters is looming
large over the study area. In view of this, it is of paramount importance to
look for and to evaluate the chromium levels in the drinking waters of the area
and assess their status of potability in light of the criteria by Bureau of
Indian Standards (B.I.S).

GSPCB public hearings for MPT projects rescheduled for March TNN | Updated: Feb 17, 2017, 06.37 AM IST
PANAJI: Goa State
Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has rescheduled the environmental public
hearings for three projects proposed by Mormugao Port Trust and will hold the same
in the second half of March. The move comes after South Goa collector Swapnil
Naik deferred the public hearings, following a petition filed by advocate Savio
Correia.
The three projects proposed by MPT include enhancement of two berths, capital dredging for capesize vessels and redevelopment of berth 8 and 9. GSPCB has invited local residents and concerned citizens to send their objections or suggestions. The public hearing for the terminal capacity enhancement at berth 5A and 6A by South West Port will be held on March 20, instead of February 17, at Vasco Residency hall. GSPCB had earlier convened the public hearing at the MPT officers' club in Sada. |

Coal is one of the most produced mineral in the country
and at times India also imports some quantity of this black mineral. It is the
main source that fuels the power industry but it has some credible drawbacks
which have become more of a concern. Drawbacks are mostly on the part of
handling the stock and transportation.

Thirst: how coal consumes and contaminates our water
BNSF Railway estimates that almost 300 kilograms of coal dust can escape from each car in a loaded coal train over a 600-kilometre journey. The coal dust contaminates air and can lead to black lung disease in humans. Coal dust can also contaminate waterways during rail transport, and through leaks in damaged coal barges and during the loading and unloading of barges. |

Coal Kills: An
Assessment of Death and Disease caused by India’s Dirtiest Energy Source
This analysis of
the health impacts of coal-fired power plants in India finds that coal is
taking a heavy toll on human life across large parts of the country. The study
finds that in 2011-2012, emissions from Indian coal plants resulted in 80,000
to 115,000 premature deaths and more than 20 million asthma cases from exposure
to PM10 pollution. Additional health impacts are quantified such as hundreds of
thousands of heart attacks, emergency room visits, hospital admissions, and
lost workdays caused by coal-based emissions. The monetary cost associated with
these health impacts are estimated to exceed US$3.3 to $4.6 billion per year.
